How great it is to have a basement in your house? Having one means more space for your home, and of course, more room to hang out in. You can convert your basement to a laundry room maybe, a storage room, or even a cozy hang out room where you and your family can pass the time and enjoy each other’s company in. Some even convert their basements to bedrooms! This space provides an almost limitless choice to what you want to put in it; the only limit is the imagination.
Having a basement, though, also presents a big problem to a home owner. Let us consider flooding in the basement. Flooding happens because water seeps into the ground and onto your basement. This especially makes a lot of damage after an extensive period of rain. All the furniture and other valuable things in the basement are of course ruined.
This is why sump pumps have been invented. Sump pumps are the best line of defense against water seepage. Sump pumps work through propelling the water via a pump system from the lowest section of the basement away from the basement floor even before it reaches the floor level. The groundwater will be directed to the sump hole, and is then pushed through a pipe that leads it away from the foundation. This is a great solution.
But you also have to remember to regularly check the sump pump to ensure an optimal functioning. All you need is some hand held brushes, screw drivers, and of course, some clean water to wash the sump pump. Make sure to brush the pump well, and do not remove the screws on the top of it to avoid releasing the oil in the motor. You might need to remove the cover on the bottom impeller to assure quality cleaning. Make sure to keep out dirt, stone and debris from the impeller, as this may cause some damage. Remember to screw the impeller on back tight.
Make sure, though, to remember to clean the sump pump when it is not in use, or when the weather permits you to. If you try to clean it up during heavy rains, you just might create the flood in your basement yourself!
If you regularly maintain your sump pump, you can now rest easy because your basement would be guaranteed virtually flood-less in the days to come!.

A garden studio is just like a mini house. Even though it is smaller, it has everything, electricity, running water, phone, internet, etc. It can be easily decorated and redecorated over time. You can design it to have a bedroom and an office area as well, so that you can both work and rest in it.
You can separate the space it offers into a bedroom with a kitchen area and a bathroom. Add a desk for you so that you can do your work there, or even work from home if you want to. Create also a relaxation area, with books, TV and DVDs available, so you can unwind and have a good time when you feel tired. Such a living arrangement can be used by any family member that prefers some separation. It would work well for one of your teenage kids, or maybe a grandparent.
The garden construction is a good space to create a mini house for your children. It will please your kids if you decorate it in various themes, such as a princess castle for girls, or as a pirates dungeon for boys. Separate the space in different areas, for work, for arts, for play, etc. Set up a study area in one corner. Place a desk there, with a computer and a bookshelf. It is a good ides to use a laptop instead of a desktop computer, as it takes up less space and it can be easily moved around. School-aged kids will use that area to complete their homework. It can also work well for preschoolers to do age-appropriate activities, such as coloring. It is up to the parents to decide if they are willing to connect the computer to the Internet. There are plenty of educational websites that can be used by children, but only under careful supervision. You may also install a printer. Lots of useful activities pages can be downloaded from the Internet.
An arts area can be created in another corner of the room. Install a low table with chairs for children to sit at and do art projects. Offer the lots of art supplies to keep them busy. Rotate the supplies each day, so that one day is dedicated for painting activities, the next day for clay modeling, and so on. Create another area for play only. Add age-appropriate toys and games and rotate them each week. Leave only some of the toys available for the children and store the others away. The following week, switch the toys. Your children will be happier and less bored.
In conclusion, you may utilize the garden studio for various purposes, for you and your children. It functions as a mini house that offers more living space for your family, regardless of its functionality.

We all love the rain. Nothing beats hanging out on your lounge, just sipping a cup of warm soup and listening to the pitter patter of the rain as it steadily hits the window panes. The crispness of the air and the cold breeze makes you want to just laze around the house and enjoy it with your loved one. Yes, we all love the rain, unless the rain itself brings us big problems with our houses, like damaging the foundation of the house or flooding the basement. This presents us with a lot to contend with, especially if we have not done anything to waterproof our foundation.
This would be a real drag, since a lot of our furniture would be damaged, and would be rendered useless. Flooding in the basement would account for a big cut in the budget, since we really have to get it fixed before another downpour of rain comes along. A large amount of work and effort will be expended to at least save some of the things that basement floods have damaged so the best solution to basement flooding, of course, is prevention.
A vast array of techniques have now been introduced to flood-proof our basements. From putting up our houses on sloping ground that would propel the water away from the foundations, to putting baseboard systems around the foundation, you can never really go wrong if you prevent flooding from happening. Sump pumps have also been introduced. This system keeps the water from coming into your home by pumping them out before it even reaches the basement floor. You also have to constantly check for cracks in the walls of the foundation and prevent them to keep the water out of your basement. Concrete sealers are now introduced in the markets, to help the concrete keep out water. Try putting the waterproofing coat on the foundation first before doing the actual landscaping, because if you don’t, you will be forced to dig about six feet into the ground next to the foundation just to apply it. Waterproofing materials need to be applied onto the foundation itself for them to work.
These preventive techniques should at least save you from bigger difficulties once the rain sets in. If you have done all the steps to ensure a flood-free basement, you can truly enjoy the rain with your warm cup of soup and your sweetheart beside you.
