There are not too many ways for individuals to make a tangible difference inside public school classrooms unless you are a teacher. Not everyone is called to teach, but for some people coming alongside a teacher in a way that can make a real difference has been a difficult task. Until now, that is. Please read on to learn about one such organization impacting American classrooms that brings teachers and individual donors together by way of the internet.
DonorsChoose [www.donorschoose.com] is an online organization tasked with bringing the needs of public school teachers to the general public. In many districts, teachers must pay out of pocket in order to provide certain “extras” for their students. These extras usually include paper, pencils, books, clipboards, teaching materials, and the like. All things that most well funded districts take for granted, but poor districts are unable to provide. Indeed, with many teachers spending several hundreds of dollars per year on their students, these extras add up and can be difficult to provide on a $33,000 salary.
The DonorsChoose site allows for teachers to register, submit project proposals for materials or for experiences that their students need to learn, and allow “Citizen Philanthropists” the opportunity to help schools directly by funding a specific project.
To date, over four million dollars worth of projects have been donated by Americans in all fifty states to schools impacting over 200,000 students in New York City, North and South Carolina, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Projects filled by donors include:
$396 donated by an individual to a fifth grade classroom in Brooklyn, NY. The teacher requested the funds to purchase four sets of Scholastic’s 100-volume library sets.
$254 requested by a Chicago kindergarten teacher to purchase a hermit crab kit and related educational materials to teach children about caring for animals [many children are totally unfamiliar with pets].
$217 requested by a San Francisco kindergarten/first grade teacher to pay the admission fee for eighteen students and eight adults to the San Francisco Zoo to see the zoo’s penguin exhibit.
$604 donated by individuals for a new Canon copier to supplement the one copier used by 300 teachers and paraprofessionals daily in an overcrowded 1600 student South Bronx school.
Projects are posted regularly by registered members and filled by interested parties through the site, which is a not-for-profit corporation started in 2000 by a Bronx public high school teacher, Charles Best, who was searching for a way that individuals could meet the needs of his under funded school. The idea of DonorsChoose was soon hatched and it quickly spread to schools around New York City before going national in 2004.
You may not have the monies available to fund an entire project, but you can designate a monetary donation that can be used to fund DonorChoose operations or toward an open project.

Reuters, an all purpose a news company, was founded in the late eighteen hundreds. When they first came into existence, they used carrier pigeons in order to get their newspaper out to potential readers. Back then, this was the most effective method of content syndication. Due to their determination to stay in existence and the way they successfully conducted their business operations, they now have a history of being in the world’s eye for more than one hundred fifty years.
Today, Reuters focuses on sub topics of business interests other than the financial aspect. Subjects other than money include world politics, automobiles, blogging, podcasting, employment, entertainment, technology and odd topics. Reuters diversified their focus off of solely serving financial news due to their success in sustaining their worldly presence over the course of time. A hypothetical guess is that Reuters online felt that they could capture and retain a wider, loyal audience if they talked about other things in their news.
Their company website is beautifully designed with informative content, pictures, slide shows and drop down menu boxes to make site navigation easy for the website visitor. Video is incorporated as a snippet in the middle right hand corner of the homepage to give you a teaser of what is going on in world news. Lastly, Reuters offers readers the option of syndicating their “RSS feeds” into “RSS feed readers”, such as Google Reader, Pluck, NewsGator, FeedDemon, PageFlakes, Furl, Digg, Reddit, so that you would not have to keep coming back to the site in order to stay abroad on the newest website content.
Michael R. Bloomberg, The CEO and founder of Bloomberg L.P. and Bloomberg Television, started the company in nineteen eighty. Prior to his financial startup, he was an employee working at Salomon Brothers. Mike Bloomberg was fired, or should say “got his pink slip”, after the company was acquired. Shortly after his infancy existance, he began racking up financial terminals, which were shabby obsolete machinery donated from companies who disposed of them. Despite the odds, Bloomberg prevailed in a time of uncertainty. He also began adversing his magazine subscriptions for sale “Bloomberg Markets”, which he honestly earned and retained twenty subscribers. Michael aimed to only serve financial markets. He saw opportunity in this industry where he could quench the thirst of Wall Street and those aborad in serving fresh financial content.
The style which is served by Bloomberg Television and his magazine set him apart from all financial competition. In Michael’s company existence of twenty eight years versus Reuters of one hundred fifty years, people say that Bloomberg came out of nowhere in left field and blew Reuters to smitherines. How so? Their styles of doing business and content syndication sets them apart in the financial world. Reuters sells news and content licensing online, while Bloomberg rents out his financial terminals to clients for three thousand dollars a month starting price. Michael also came from a working class family, who had very little savings, working his way up in life to becoming a self made billionaire.
Additionally, Bloomberg Television sells advertising inside of his video player, making it look extra attractive to the eyeballs from fellow partnering financial companies. Some advertisers on Bloomberg Television include niche markets on Forex, Online Checking, Bank Notes and Offshore services. Today, a majority of advertisements on Reuters are advertisers who are partnering merchants on Google acquired DoubleClick. Bloomber Radio carries daily broadcasts that Reuters is not believed to have incorporated into their business model.
While these two money strapped titans aim to please the customer, they do differ in their own sense. In anything anyone does, some competition does come into play. Competition can bring out the best or otherwise in people or corporations. In overall, it would be nothing more than lessons which can help to better anyone, even customers

Russia is in the news more and more these days as, under Vladimir Putin’s (and now Dmitry Medvedev’s) leadership, Russia is slowly recovering from the fall of the Soviet Union, and the basket case days of Yeltsin’s leadership in the 1990s.
Although Russia may not be heading in the democratic direction that many in the West would like (in fact, it seems to be heading towards a semi-autocratic state, in which business interests are paramount) Russia is one of the world’s fastest growing economies. Although not all sectors of its economy are firing on all cylinders, it’s vast oil and mineral resources have brought a great deal of wealth into the country, giving the Russian leadership and people new vigor. This in turn has led to confidence on the international stage, and a realization that they no longer need to back down in international disputes – even when they turn violent. Witness the August 2008 war in Georgia, for example.
If you follow international affairs, or are involved in international business or investing, it is becoming more important than ever to make sure that you keep on top of the latest Russian news. And happily, as the web matures, it is becoming easier and easier to do that, even if you don’t speak a word of Russian.
There are plenty of great English-language Russian news sites out there, in several different categories.
State backed Russsian news agencies like Interfax and RIA Novosti act as one of the best sources of real time news coming out of Russia. They publish many stories per day, on a similar model to Western news agencies like the Press Agency or Reuters. Being state backed they are open to accusations of bias, however, in my experience they’ve usually proved quite reliable.
Also based in Russia are newspapers like Pravda and the Moscow Times, both of which have English language internet news sites. Pravda tends towards the sensationalist, and pro-Russian, whereas the Moscow Times is aimed at expats. It tends to be more sober in its coverage and places more emphasis on business news, but has a clear pro-Western bias.
The big US and European newspapers also cover Russia, as you’d expect. The New York Times and the Guardian, for example, both have a page on their websites dedicated to news stories from Russia. Each, as you’d imagine has its own biases, and the coverage of Russia is often critical.
An emerging trend is the growth in specialist news sites covering Russia – often focusing specifically on the lucrative business market. Two good examples of this kind of site are Business News Europe (which also covers emerging markets in Eastern Europe) and Marchmont News, which covers regional business news.

Small businesses that use Christian magazines and newspapers for advertising have discovered a secret not many other businesses know about. In effect, every time they place an ad in a Christian publication they receive a disproportionately higher number of responses then when placing ads in some other type of magazine.
Naturally, discovering this “little secret” invariably leads them to include Christian magazine advertising campaigns into the mix of all their future marketing efforts.
So why are Christian readers so responsive to the ads they see in their publications? Simply for this reason: 74% of Christian magazine and newspaper readers prefer to do business with advertisers that they have seen in their magazines and papers!
These statistics are not just the result of surveys regularly commissioned by the magazines to understand their readership, but are also supported by the impressive results the advertisers receive to their ads.
To fully interpret this phenomenon you need to understand the psychology behind it. Christian readers have a tendency to establish very strong bonds with their publications. Many view them not just as sources of information but also as valuable guides in life’s journey. The love and trust they have in their publications often spills over to the advertisements, which they regularly use to acquire information on products and services of interest to them.
As a group, these readers are linked together by their passion and interest in their respective communities and churches, and these weekly and monthly newspapers and magazines help satisfy their appetite. In fact, they value their Christian publications so highly that they often come back an average of 2.3 times to re-read their issues. What this means to the average advertiser, is that every ad they place in these magazines gets additional exposure thanks to the longer shelf life.
If you are a small business who understands that advertising is the motor that keeps your business going, and who is always searching for cost-effective ways to promote your company and generate new business, then you’ll be pleased with the advertising opportunities offered by these Christian publications. To be sure, it meets the two most critical elements necessary to carry out a successful print advertising campaign, that is, reaching a focused targeted audience, and doing it cost-effectively.
Being able to focus you message to a specific group is key to any successful marketing strategy. If you trying to put out your message to a large audience with very differing background, interests, values, etc. your chance of running a productive marketing campaign is in danger of failing. The more varied the audience the greater your risk of failure. But with specialty niche publications, such as the Christian magazines, you overcome this roadblock. Moreover, each publication caters to a specific segment within the Christian population. Some publications are targeted to very conservative Christians, while others may be targeted to progressive Christians, or community organizers, pastors and church leaders with purchasing responsibilities, urban young professionals, Christian teens, etc., making your job of targeting a specific audience even easier.
As for whether these magazines and newspapers offer affordable advertising rates, the answer is a resounding yes! As opposed to mainstream publications, Christian magazines and papers tend to have smaller circulations. Some are have nationwide distribution, while others are more local and focused on specific regions of the country. The advertising rates they charge are often infinitesimally lower than mainstream publications. In some cases, display ads for as low as $100.
You can find advantages and disadvantages in practically any form of advertising you select. But when it comes to niche specialty publications such as Christian magazines, any disadvantage is greatly overshadowed by the benefits they produce. Between their low-cost advertising structure and the targeted and motivated readership they offer, Christian magazines and papers offer the small business a marketing opportunity rarely seen.
For those who have never considered it, the time might have come to explore it.

One of the benefits of modern media is the use of the latest technologies has changed the speed of relaying information to different parts of the world. Decades ago the catch phrase was the latest news; today the popular phrase is breaking news because people received the latest news by the hour, every hour. Unlike ages before, people received news days or weeks after the incident occurred. Before, it was plain global news, at present it has become more specific using phrases such as Islam news, culture news, middle east new, and online news to name a few. Due to internet the world has been getting smaller and people get easy access with latest news development. It is a welcome development as people will be able to digest specific information easily.
Online technologies have allowed people to search and received news developments at a click of a mouse. And not only that, they can type specific key words such as gulf news, international business news, and middle east news to arrive easily at the web pages they want immediately. Long ago, newspaper readers’ patience has to be tested before they can read latest Muslim news, Islamic news, and Middle East News. The search bar features have slimmed down time constraint of accessing specific news to readers. In addition, some functions of these sites has exposed readers to links that give related information of the events.
Readers have to skim from different pages to find one article about world business news. Oftentimes, readers have skipped the news that they want to read as it is buried in the inside pages. In addition, newspapers then do not provide in depth analysis of events that unfolded during that time. Online editions have categorized different news items such as world business news, international business news, news in middle east, and Islamic news, to give more details as the event progresses every seconds of the day. And because of these readers have are better informed and are more clarified with the issues.
The internet has further created additional source of information for everybody. The web does not host online editions of major newspapers. It is home to websites and blogs that concentrate on specific news categories. Thus, you have sites for Islam news only, blogs for culture news, and webpages that caters only gulf news. In addition, thousands of articles that deals specifically with topics like Islamic news, international business news, and middle east business news, just to name a few are easily accessible. It gives readers of more objective and detailed information of specific interest.
It has been predicted before that the web will replace newspapers as major source of current events information. This is the reason why newspapers have invaded the web to benefit from this development. At present, both off line and online versions are available for everybody. It is not yet definite if land base newspapers will suffer extinction just like the dinosaurs of long ago. At any rate, people are still enjoying both versions.

London’s jubilation over being selected as the site of the 2012 Olympics is already having disquieting echoes for many Londoners. The estimated costs of holding the games, one of the world’s biggest spectacles, in the British capital have already risen at least 40% since the city was awarded the honour in 2005. Were that not bad enough, many people think that the additional ?900 million figure put forth by the UK’s Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell, last November, is itself a significant underestimate.
The reasons for the cost rises would appear to be mostly the predictable ones: inflation of construction costs for all of the new facilities needed to host the event and that ever-rising price of all modern events: security. But British government officials alarmed by the ever-rising estimates claim that the ‘predictable’ increases of both of those costs – and several others – were not factored into the original bid.
‘Today’s increase is just a starting point,’ Shadow Olympics minister Hugh Robertson told the BBC News. ‘While the figures remain ambiguous, we can only expect further increases.’
More immediately, the 2008 Olympics, to be held in Beijing, may hold hidden costs of a different kind for China, some observers are beginning to speculate. There seems little reason to doubt that the country’s famously booming economy can pay whatever sticker is attached to the global sporting event. Because actual costs are not only sustained but controlled by the central government, only officials deepest inside the Communist state may ever know the true final costs of the event.
Still, people who view the event from a broader perspective are beginning to ask what impact the Olympics will have on the country by bringing the world’s attention to its contribution to worldwide air pollution and, thus, global warming. In addition to being host to the Olympic games, China is home to 60 of the world’s most polluted cities, and the poor air quality of its largest, the capital Beijing, will be on display to the enormous international audience that attend the event, many visiting China for the first time.
The Olympics are, after all, at heart an athletics event. Presumably, not all of its contests can be held in indoor stadiums and other venues in which climate can be fully controlled. Even if they were, athletes and spectators alike will have to spend some time outdoors – getting to and from the events, shopping, and sight-seeing – and the physically fit and unfit alike are sure to notice the effect the air has on their lungs and bodies overall. It is now said that any deep breath taken in Beijing comes with a residual taste of coal dust. That’s hardly surprising in a country in which a new coal-powered electricity-generating plant comes on line every week.
At the time it was awarded the Olympics, the Chinese government was thrilled at the prospect of putting the emerging country on show. In the wake of a gathering storm of worldwide conferences about the disastrous effects of greenhouse gas emissions on the environment – and, accordingly, economies – of the planet, one wonders if the industrial giant will be as pleased to have its seriously challenged physical environment on such prominent, worldwide display.

Grapevine has it that the paper boy may soon be out of business with the emergence of news blogs on the internet. Conventionally, most home owners, especially those belonging to the older generation are used to reading the daily newspaper in print in order to stay updated with current global news. However, this trend is experiencing a change where the newer generation now looks to the internet when it comes to staying updated with the latest happenings around the world.
This shifting trend poses a threat to many of the conventional print newspapers. So much so that many of them have initiated the move to go online. Many newspaper companies have experienced a drop in their sales due to this new emerging trend. However, the danger for news agencies is far from over because they are being rivaled by another creation of the web that comes in the form of news blogs.
These are basically online websites that deliver round the clock updated breaking news from around the world. These news aggregation websites do not only give you the daily news as quoted from other news sources but they also give you the opportunity to watch original news programs covering your favorite niches. Many of these blogs feature separate sections, writers, videos and original programs on politics, business, sports, entertainment, biz and tech and much more. In essence a news blog is everything that a newspaper could ever wish to be.
There is no denying the fact that news blogs offer the news seeker a much more enhanced experience. At the same time however it has had a significant impact on journalism. This is because readers are given the opportunity to comment and give feedback on anything they read, see or hear on these blogs thus keeping the journalists in check. Unlike conventional media where it is difficult to identify a twisted agenda, with news blogs intentions are always kept in check.
When examined in detailed this phenomenon comes across as a very important and vital development of our century. In an era where the media is being blamed for promoting vested agendas, news blogs deliver impartial breaking news and headlines from around the world in an unbiased, unprejudiced and informative manner.
The newspaper in print can never even dream to match the value that news blogs have to offer. This is why you will find them to be increasing in terms of popularity all over the world whereas the sales and popularity of the conventional printed paper seem to be dwindling fast.
