As the name suggests, free hosting is a type of web hosting service that can be availed for free. Many small business owners trying to save money would like to build their websites on free platforms. Unfortunately, there are some very real dangers involved, all of which could have serious financial implications for your business.
Building a website on a free platform requires you to relinquish all control over your project. Since you do not own the system, you have no authority or involvement in decisions made, leaving you vulnerable to the impact of any changes.
Before you make your decision, please consider the following:
Firstly, the owner of the given system may do as he or she sees fit, without allowing you any recourse. There are numerous changes which may have an impact on your web site’s future, such as the adding of third party advertisements, limitations regarding disk space or bandwidth, or even the termination of the free service in general. Webmasters all over the world are regularly caught up in changes like these, often with catastrophic consequences.
Secondly, any such service would obviously place a limitation on the available facilities. On the one hand the owner has to encourage users to upgrade and use the paid version of the service, and on the other hand it is used to prevent abuse of the system. However, obtaining your own domain and hosting will give you access to a myriad of features, ranging from a simple help desk form right through to a shopping cart for e-commerce installations.
Thirdly, you may want to consider that, depending on your trade or industry, some customers may not take you seriously. Building your website on a free platform is almost like having an office at the local flea market. It will not do your credibility any good, and is likely to cost you more money than you will save.
Lastly, you will be judged by what other users are creating on the platform. If some of the users create rubbish, the whole platform is likely to be penalized for it, reducing your chances of getting search engine visitors. Additionally, if any of the users engage in illegal activities, the whole service risks being shut down, including your small business website you worked so hard on.
At the end of the day, the potential savings offered by a free website service is a fraction of what you stand to lose in the event of unexpected changes. Additionally, it is likely to hold you back, and make it difficult to brand yourself and your business in the process.
It is simply not worth the risk involved.
