Small Business Websites – How Do You Rate the Performance of Your Website?

I was recently working with a small business owner on redesigning his website. When I redesign a website, I usually like to know what is working on the existing website, and what is not working? When answering these questions it is important to know what the number one aim of the website is. Is it to sell product? Is it to generate leads? Is it to provide information? When we know this, it is then important that we have meaningful information as to how well the website is achieving this goal. So how do we find it?

There are a number of website statistics programs out there that will provide you with information. Google analytics is very good, and it is free to use. Another one that I use is Statcounter, which has both free and paid options. Make sure that you get more than just a hit counter that registers a hit every time a page is opened. And make sure that you have the ability to exclude certain computers from registering as traffic to your website. When I design a website for a small business I exclude the computers that access the internet at the business, I exclude home computer of the small business owner or owners, and I exclude my computer. We want to know how many times a potential customer looks at your website, not how many times you look at it.

If your website is designed to sell product there are some important statistics that I like to look at –
How many times do the product pages get opened relatively to the landing page? How many times does a product get sold when someone lands on a product page? What product pages get opened the most and which ones get opened the least? What pages do people most often leave the site from? What keywords generate the best sales conversion? What geographical areas generate the best sales conversion? What advertising and promotion generate the best sales conversion?

If your website is designed to generate leads you can ask similar questions in relation to lead generation.

If your website is designed to provide information to your customers then I like to ask the following questions.
How many pageloads per visitor to your site? What page do people most frequently leave from? What keywords are people searching for to find the website? What are the most popular and least popular pages? What page do people most commonly land on?

When I work with a small business owner to redesign their website the two most important things that I like to know is how well your website does achieve your goal? That is how many sales do you get per visitor, or how many leads do you get per visitor? The next thing that I like to know is what page do people most frequently leave the site from? If you have a page that has a particularly high ‘bounce rate’ then this is one of the first pages to look at with your website. There are many reasons why people leave your website – maybe you are targeting the wrong traffic, so you are getting the wrong type of customer. Maybe the website does not seem to provide what they are looking for. Maybe the website is too hard to find what they are looking for.

It does take time to get meaningful data about a website performance. If you have meaningful data already then that helps. Once we have meaningful data then the process of testing begins to find what works and what does not work. There are many factors on a page to test, including layout, navigation, wording, the shopping cart, and many more. One of the most successful ways to improve your website is to mimic websites that are already successful. Have a look at websites like Amazon, Google, and eBay and look at their layouts, navigation and wording and this can help you get ideas. These websites are always testing and retesting to find ways to do things better. Why not use their research as well.

5 Reasons To Create Your Own Small Business Website

How do you get your name out, further than the boundaries of your small town where your business is based? Are you limiting your reach?

Most likely if you are you are limiting your small business’ potential.

The best way to get your name out there is to brand yourself and create a strong internet presence.

To the small business owner this may make perfect sense (and it definitely is) but where should one start? Creating your own small business website is the logical way to go.

You can hire a freelance web designer to do your website for you and pay him a great deal of money. Or you can go with a web design firm. These are just some of the options but they may be out of your reach if you have just launched your small business and haven’t even reached the break even point as yet.

There is another option and that is to do it yourself.

Here are 5 reasons why you should create your own small business website.

1. You will save a considerable amount of money by doing your own website and this can be done very easily with the different types of software available today. Even if you don’t know complicated coding.

2. You will create bigger opportunity for yourself and your business as the internet can bring you closer to your target market. As a matter of fact it brings your target market closer to you as they find you instead of you having to find them.

3. You will be more in control of the online side of your business even if you do hire someone to maintain your site for you afterwards.

4. You will be able to partner with businesses related to your market allowing for joint ventures that wouldn’t have been possible if you had been offline.

5. You will cut advertising costs considerably as it will take less effort and money getting clients.

So you see, creating your own small business website is to your advantage and this is something you should consider in the early planning stages of your business. If your small business is already well established but doesn’t have an online presence then now is the time to start.

Creating websites yourself doesn’t have to be a hassle. You do not have to learn complicated code since most website builders nowadays are wysiwyg or what-you-see-is-what-you-get editors. Even better are the drag and drop type of website builders where you can just drag your elements such as images and video where you want them to be.

One of the best drag and drop website builders to be released in recent times is Site Rubix, which was created with marketers in mind. The website builder makes it possible to create beautiful and professional looking websites in a matter of minutes. It is definitely something I would recommend for creating your first small business website.

Online Marketing – Ways to Get Free Traffic to Your Business’ Website

Today, getting traffic to your website can be extremely hard. Online competition continues to get even fiercer as more and more companies are looking to expand their business. There are plenty of benefits to leading your company from being a strictly brick-and-mortar business to a business with an effective online presence. For one, by going online you have a broader range of customers to appeal to. If you are attempting to market your business worldwide, imagine the type of business you could potentially receive from a healthy web presence. However, before you can become a successful internet business, you will need to fine-tune your online marketing strategy.

There are several different ways to go about marketing your business online. Many companies will opt to use methods that are free, as these can be a great way to save money. While there are plenty of internet marketing techniques that cost money, why pay for something when you can be just as successful without the added cost?

There are many different internet marketing techniques that your that your company may decide to use. Usually, it will be extremely beneficial to use two or three of these techniques in building/growing your company’s online presence.

Below are a couple of free online marketing methods that you will want to try. All of these methods are free, and each of them has their own individual benefits. Remember, it will never hurt to use both of these options at once.

Affiliates – Building a list of affiliates is extremely helpful when it comes to getting business to your website. Creating your own affiliate program can be extremely helpful. It not only leverages the workload but it is free! The purpose behind affiliating is to have other websites advertise for you. It can be as simple as another website mentioning your company’s name with a link to your website. Search engine optimization (SEO) – SEO is a very popular technique used in online marketing. It involves using keywords and backlinks to help your website’s visibility grow. The goal is to have your website show up on the first page during any relevant queries related to your company or product, and a Boston SEO company will be able to best help move your website up search engine listings.

These are just two commonly used free methods of internet marketing. If your company is able to spend more money on marketing, you may want to look into pay per click (PPC) advertising, and you may want to consider hiring a qualified, experienced SEO company to do the hard work for you. In the end, what makes the most sense for you and/or your company will be heavily reliant on your budget. However, no matter what, if you want your business to succeed online, then you’ll need to use proper internet marketing techniques to get your company’s name noticed by the search engines!

Pre-Built Web Sites For a Hassle Free Business

A really good website needs to have several things. The most important things are visual appeal, relevant content, relevant graphics, and credibility. Have you ever tried to build a website for your internet marketing business? It takes such a long time and even if you’re good at it, you still have to take the time to fill it with content that is relevant and that sells. A pre-built website will have the 4 main attributes of a good website already done for you. All you have to do is install it.

Visual Appeal

I’ve seen some really good websites, and I’ve seen some really bad ones. Visual appeal is everything. If you’re like me, the really bad websites don’t even get 5 seconds of your time. You take one look at it and say, “Next!”. I know I do. So it’s really important that the first impression be a good one. Pre-built web sites have this already figured out.

Relevant Content

The second most important thing your website needs is relevant content. This is so important because if your content isn’t relevant, then the visitors to your site aren’t seeing what they’re looking for. This means they’ll leave your site very quickly. The more relevant your content is, the better chance your visitors will buy something from you.

Credibility

Credibility is the most important attribute of any website! If the visitor doesn’t think your information is accurate, truthful, or real, they will not buy from you. When you lose credibility, you lose sales. The two are directly related.

Use Magazine Classified Ads to Build Internet Business

Use Print Ads to Bring Potential Customers to Your Internet Site

Print advertizing can be very profitable to Internet operators. Low-cost classified ads in targeted print magazines can drive folks to your site. Ads not targeted will prove to me fruitless.

One problem to Internet business operators is that ads must be tracked to determine the advertising dollar return. If a visitor comes to the site from a print ad, how do you track it? Well, the simplest way is to have your ad send them to a page (URL) used only for a specific ad. Place a counter on that page to see what traffic is generated by the ad. From this page, your customer can than move to your desired URL and message.

You may want to welcome the visitor to your tracking page with a request for his or her first name and e-mail address. That way, you will know which enquires place orders and those that can be contacted later by e-mail to persuade them to buy your product or service. A free gift or newsletter might intice them to leave their information. Just don’t make it a requirement to move on to your sales pitch.

Some operators request more information than the first name and e-mail address. Is that a good idea? How do you feel about it? Remember that the visitor is there to find the information described in your print ad. He is not there for the Spanish Inquisition. With this in mind, you may not want to ask more than two or three questions.

One Advantage of Print Advertising That Directs Traffic to Your URL

Your URL can be an ad in itself. That is if it is named correctly. I have a dozen web sites. I’ve tried to give them descriptive names that make the URLs ads in themselves. For example, one of my sites is http://www.secret-cash.com.

Another is http://www.money-making-books.com.

Do you get the point?

These URLs are small ads in themselves. This allows me to use fewer words or just the URL to promote my business.

Article Marketing Tips to Boost Your Business

Have you ever imagined the power of writing? By writing simple articles about your product and services and by posting them in the Internet, you can boost your business. Article submission is considered as one of the most influential factors in Internet marketing. But when you write the articles or submit articles you need to follow some techniques.

When you write the title of the article, it should relate the content. The readers must have a notion of what they are going to read. Unless your titles convey the topic, the readers will be confused and move on to other sites. You can submit your articles in some of the popular online directories which are visited by thousands of people everyday. If you can submit article in any of these directories, you will have the maximum exposure. This is because such online directories will provide you with effective back links which will allow your site to rank higher.

The most important thing in an article is information. People will read your articles for information and so do not mislead or disappoint them. Think of contemporary issues which will create an impact on the readers. Give them relevant information which they would like to know. Focus on answering basic questions like Why, How or Where about a topic. Demonstrate your expertise in your subject and establish yourself as an authority in the virtual world.

When you write an article for the net, you will have to keep it short and simple. One should be precise, concise, and direct when they are talking about a topic. Unnecessary embellishment in writing should be avoided strictly. Use language that is crisp and free flowing. Keep the paragraphs to be short and simple.

Moreover when you submit articles you should think of the keywords. These key phrases which will be sprinkled in the article will help the readers to access the articles when they type the corresponding keyword. You should take help of RSS feeds which will syndicate them to all the interested people.

You will need to use auto responders for all your articles. If you have a master autoresponder, you can list all your articles and then automate this section. You should post all the articles on your site. This helps in building credibility and accountability of the articles. Once the article is written, you can use the affiliates to brand the articles. You can utilize the connection of the affiliates to promote your products well. You can use the links with discretion in articles. Apart from the relevant article, you can also use the links in other articles. You can self-promote and help to spread the word about your service and products.

A WiMax Connection Is Useful for the Whole Family

You might think that you need to have some kind of special job or need in order to get signed up for the new type of mobile Internet that everyone is talking about, but that is not the case. In fact, anyone can sign up for a WiMax connection and you don’t need to have important Internet business. There is something that anyone in your family can get out of this type of connection.

For Mom and Dad this type of technology can be very useful for work. If you have a lot on your plate, like most parents do, then you probably have to do a lot things on the go. With a WiMax connection you can always bring your work and the Internet with you when you have to leave the house or the office. You can really make the best use of your time. When you have a few down moments waiting in the car to pick the kids up from school you can start to use that time to accomplish the things that you need to do or to check in with the office. This can also come in handy when it comes to keeping the house in order. You can update your online calendar and pay important bills online while little Jimmy has soccer practice. There is no reason why time has to be wasted just sitting around when you could be doing productive things online. But a WiMax connection doesn’t just have to be used for business. You can also take advantage of these down moments to do some online shopping, read new stories online, instant message with a friend, or whatever other things you like to do on the Internet but might not have the time to do at home.

For the kids there are also a wide variety of different uses of a WiMax connection. Kids mostly use the Internet for fun things like chatting with their friends, social networking web sites, and playing games online. All these things are possible with a WiMax connection, so this can be a great way to keep the kids happy and occupied while you are out running errands together. There are also other ways that kids are using the Internet. There are a lot of educational websites on the Internet now and there are a lot that kids even like to visit. The Internet is even being used in the classroom more and more. So the kids time using the 4G network doesn’t just have to be chatting with their BFFs on Facebook, they can get online and learn and have fun in the process. Older kids can also use the connection to do online research for school papers and projects.

There are many options for the whole family when it comes to using a 4G mobile Internet connection. If you have an idea of a way to use it, chances are it can be done.

Accelerating Your Business With Article Marketing

It is absolutely essential to implement article marketing now that it is so vital to online and offline businesses. Consistency is the key to becoming successful. Generating articles becomes a part of your daily routine. This can be outsourced for an inexpensive amount each month if you do not have the time required to produce the articles. This is such a powerful tool that you do not want to allow lack of time or ‘writer’s block’ to prevent you from cashing in on it.

By employing article marketing you will draw more sales and more customers to your online business, thereby amplifying your online presence. You already are aware, if you have done any kind of online research as to how to attain that presence, that this is one of the strongest forms of online marketing that exists. The thing that is responsible for generating millions of dollars in sales and bringing millions of new subscribers to a massive amount of companies promoting their products and services, is article marketing.

When it comes to online marketing, articles are a remarkably powerful tool. If you are a novice to online marketing or internet business in general, then this is particularly true. A fast, inexpensive approach to get highly targeted visitors to your website is writing and submitting articles.

Following are 3 guidelines to utilizing article marketing as free publicity for your business.

1) Make it a practice to read others’ article writing styles and techniques and observe how they deliver tips, value and secrets within the body of their article. Observe their writing styles and look for something innovative and fresh, techniques you can use to make your article more captivating.

2) There are article writing services that produce 400 new articles per month and will do this for you at a reasonable monthly rate; if you have ‘writer’s block,’ do not have the time to write or do not write well, you can outsource your article marketing campaign to them.

3) Making article marketing a daily habit is the key to effectively using it. In order to facilitate reliability for blog sites to take advantage of, you must build an article campaign in your niche and continue to get articles out in a consistent manner. Your online presence will grow much more rapidly when you do this because they will then become subscribers to your articles.

Your business will reap the rewards when you take full advantage of the various uses and rewards there are with article marketing. Being a strong writer is no longer a prerequisite because you can outsource that. Recognizing the value of article marketing is more important. Your company and its product or services essentially receive free publicity and exposure. Adding article marketing to your company’s marketing plan is crucial. It will assist you in expanding your branding and in getting your message out to the masses.

It is vital that you incorporate article marketing in your marketing arsenal if your business wants to use an economical, outcome generating type of marketing. Your business will then be powered to the next level with your consistent success.

Top 5 Ways to Generate Low Cost Website Traffic For Your Internet Business

There is a single prime directive you should focus on that is geared toward generating income for your website and internet business – and that is a continuous stream of website traffic visitors. If no one visits your site, how do you expect to collect leads on your capture page? No leads mean nobody to contact through your autoresponder system. Many websites are set up but fail when it comes to driving the traffic.

When setting up your new internet business with a website designed to generate leads, your lead generation strategy will entail a two-pronged approach: paid leads vs. free or low cost methods to generate those leads. Obviously, the more advertising budget you have to spend on leads, the faster you will build your internet business.

When starting out, your available cash for advertising may be limited, that’s fine, start out using these methods until you have some income, then ratchet up the advertising budget when you can afford it.

I recall when one of my mentors first started out in his internet business, he said spent all his available cash on paid advertising. He was told it was what the top gurus swear by, so he followed suit. The problem was he didn’t realize how complex it can get and if you don’t use certain secret methods, you can lose a lot of money before you realize what you were doing didn’t work. At that point, he was forced to use low cost and free methods.

Here’s a secret: Just because you get people to your website, don’t expect them all to sign up with you. Expect very few, in fact. Having this low expectation which is not necessarily a pessimistic view, will actually drive you to focus more on traffic generating efforts as opposed to sitting back and assuming the website alone will do all the work.

1) Reciprocal Links

This is a solid and proven method that will help your internet business. Rarely would you see a site where there is no link to another site. Many webmasters are willing to trade links with one another so that they could produce more public awareness about their sites. You’ll soon experience an upsurge of the traffic coming in to your site from other sites.

A key factor in exchanging your internet business links with other sites is having the same niche or content as the other sites. They should share a common subject or demographic so that their site and its contents is complimentary to your site and/or your niche.

Exchanging links also boosts your chances of getting a high ranking in search engine results. It is common knowledge that search engines ranks high sites that have inbound and outbound theme-related links. With a good ranking position in the search engines, you will generate more traffic in your website without the high costs.

2) Write and Submit Articles

There are many article directories online that compile articles for every category and subject you can think of. It is free to join the article directories and set up an account. The article directory with the most traffic (most popular) is EzineArticles, so submit to this directory first before any other.

Since you are an expert in the internet business, write articles that produce tips and guidelines to the subject or niche relating to your business. Your purpose is to write in such a way that doesn’t necessarily pitch your primary opportunity so much as your knowledge and helpful advice.

The whole point is to 1) get lots of links out onto other sites (article directories) and 2) compel the readers of your articles to visit your site via your link.

Make sure before you write a lot of articles, you have a strategy for the articles. You will want to identify a specific target group who may be searching for a particular keyword and then write a series of articles centered on that keyword. Then include the keyword in the headline, the description and the first paragraph and repeat it throughout the article but no more than 5% of the total words of the entire article.

3) Create a Blog.

This may sound like duplication of your primary website, but it is a way to leverage all the articles you write for your internet online exposure. A blog could be business based which has content related to your business and industry or it can be more focused on branding you as an individual so that people can get to know you, find out about you and relate to you on a personal level and not just “all business all the time”.

The Blog would have links back to your main site(s) or landing pages. You could make blog posts that are frequently published and then elaborate on these blogs to create informational articles that you post to article directories. You can even set up an opt-in box on your blog so people can subscribe via email list to your posts without having to go directly to your blog site.

4) Broadcast Videos

This strategy will help you get backlinks by cross linking your videos to your other websites and blogs. Videos provide another level of marketing that can convey a certain mood or excitement that is hard to do with written articles. In addition, videos on your website and blog as well as YouTube will add a more interesting visitor experience to the site. Of course, if you don’t feel you come across effectively on camera, then consider using screen capture type videos instead by using flash movies or how-to videos using your desktop.

5) Social Media

Do not neglect to get a Facebook account. If you can add Twitter, do so. Make sure you take the time to set up your profile properly. Be authentic and don’t come across as just trying to promote your business. Share and contribute as you add fans and followers. Join groups to leverage your presence. You can also set up a widget so that your blog posts are automatically posted to your social media pages, saving time and adding content. There will come a time when if you don’t have a Facebook account, you will be seen as out of touch, so be savvy and start up a page and keep it updated.

So those are five fairly fundamental methods for attracting visitors to your sites. Knowing all of the components of driving traffic is one thing, but having a systematized approach will target the traffic to your website in a manner that is known as a marketing campaign. A campaign is a strategic plan that you develop in advance of getting out all your links, targeting specific websites to drive traffic to and knowing where the traffic is coming from so that you can test the results and effectiveness of your campaign.
